Andrews Independent School District’s enrollment experienced a decrease from January to February, which is a fairly common trend for those months based on a historical enrollment report to be presented at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Down to his last throw at the Big 12 Indoor All-Conference meet a few weeks back, Andrews High School product Jacob Mechler was trying to advance to the National Championships for the first time in his five-year college career.
Both the Andrews Middle School swim teams and members of the Andrews Aquatic Club scored points all over the place at the Pecos Sixth Grade and Under meet.
Andrews junior Alexys Cornejo hit two more long balls over the fence for her team high 11 home runs for the season, and senior Rose Hernandez cleared loaded bases with a grand slam to lead the Lady Mustangs to a run-rule 16-2 district road win in five innings over Seminole.
Andrews High School hurdler Jonathan Pipes proved to be the best in the 110 hurdles and almost duplicated his performance in the 300 hurdles with a second at the mostly 6A and 5A Pirate Relays at Lubbock Cooper to lead the Mustang track boys to a thirdplace team finish at the 10-team meet.
Despite a field littered with 6A and 5A programs, Andrews senior Mya Jones blew away the field in the shot put, plus all three AHS relays placed in the top four, to net 38 points and lead Coach Wade Floyd’s team to a fourth-place finish at the Pirate Relays at Lubbock Cooper.
The road to the boys UIL state golf championships, set for April 29th and 30th at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsville, Texas, is still a long way off with some possible bumpy roads, but on paper – things look good for Coach Jeff Williamson’s team.
