With district play not too far away once they get back from the Christmas break, the Andrews Lady Mustangs continued to play solid and winning basketball Tuesday. After losing six of their first seven games out of the blocks, Coach Quint Anthony’s girls have really turned it around lately winning five of their last eight games. The AHS girls added another impressive win to their resume with a 26-22 road win at Big Spring behind solid free throw shooting.
On a volleyball court, whether she is getting a kill, picking up a dig, making a block, getting to a ball very few could defensively, or serving an ace that is unmatched in the district, Lauren Vasquez is not your typical sophomore.
A week after the Andrews Mustangs had the ‘Play of the Year’ with Gehrig Morris the winner on an area fan vote, Andrews senior quarterback Ashton Galvan took the biggest award in the process.
The Andrews Mustangs 8th ‘B’ basketball boys had two impressive victories to open their own Mustangs 8th ‘B’ Classic before losing in overtime to Seminole in a close game 42-40 in the title game.
A 16-6 deficit in the first eight minutes of the game led to a poor start for the Andrews Lady Mustangs in their road game with Abernathy and they could never quite work their way all the way back.
In a game that was much closer than the final score, the Andrews Mustangs Black JV basketball team lost to 6A Midland Legacy 48-37 on the road Tuesday. Andrews led 16-7 after the first quarter but were outscored by quarter margins of 12-2, 18-12 and 11-7 for the 11-point loss.
The last three quarters were very competitive in the Andrews Mustangs road game with 6A Midland Legacy, but the first eight minutes were the back breaker.
