LaVon Blake Schooley, a cherished family man and respected musician, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on June 15, 1931, in Burnet, Texas, to Ben and Letha Schooley, LaVon’s life was marked by a deep commitment to his loved ones and a passion for music that brought joy to many.

LaVon was the beloved husband of the late Mildred Schooley and a devoted father to his son, Calvin Schooley, and wife Mickey O’Connor, of Lubbock, TX. His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Tammy Lowery of Lampasas, TX, and Terry Engledow and her husband Ken of Cleveland, OK. Additionally, LaVon was blessed to see the growth of his family tree with his great-grandchildren, Chase Myers, Emily Boyd and husband David, Dakota Myers, Natalie Papenthien and husband Ethan, and Brittany Engledow. He also witnessed the joy of his great-greatgrandchildren, Ezra and Hudson, who added another layer of happiness to his full life.

Preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Letha Schooley, his brothers Clyde, Jack, and W.R. Schooley, and sisters Bennie Lee Grant, Louise Hall, Alva Lee Riley, and Geraldine Hall, LaVon’s memory will be a guiding light for all the lives he touched.

LaVon dedicated many years of his life as a truck driver in the oil fields, where his hard work and dependability were well known and appreciated. Outside of his professional life, LaVon was a talented musician, deeply immersed in the world of Bluegrass music. His skills as a rhythm guitarist, bass player, and singer were not only a personal joy but also an integral part of the cultural fabric of his community. LaVon’s love for music was infectious, and his performances were always met with enthusiasm and applause.

An avid competitor, LaVon also found great pleasure in Black Powder Shooting Competitions, where his precision and sportsmanship were on full display. His competitive spirit was always balanced with fairness and camaraderie, making him a favorite among his peers.

As a family man, LaVon’s commitment to his relatives was unwavering. He took great pride in keeping up with the genealogy of the family, ensuring that the stories and connections of the past were preserved for future generations. His role as a family historian was a testament to his deep understanding of the importance of heritage and belonging.

LaVon Blake Schooley’s life and subtle humor will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. His was a life welllived, full of the music he loved and the family he cherished. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those he left behind.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate his life at 2:00PM, Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Bethel Cemetery in Burnet, TX, with Ken Engledow officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.
