Larry Dwight Slaughter
Larry Dwight, Slaughter age 80, of Andrews, TX joined his Lord and Savior on March 14th, 2024, while at his home in Andrews. He was born on March 1, 1944, in San Saba, TX to Ralph Bert Slaughter and Altha (Bessent) Slaughter. Larry had a great childhood growing up in San Saba with many siblings, cousins, and great friends. He and Michael Phillips had so many wild stories they told along with some other high school buddies; one wonders how they lived through it. He graduated from San Saba High School in 1963 and attended Texas Tech University where he lived and worked at the Dairy operated by the University. Later when his best friend, Michael Phillips was drafted into the Vietnam War, Larry decided to volunteer so he and Michael could attend Basic Training together on the buddy system. Michael was sent to Vietnam, while Larry was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana during his term of service. After his time in the service, Larry spent time working for the Texas Highway department before moving to Odessa to join his brother Gary at Basin Testers. Eventually Larry left to start his own company LG Pump, which became his crowning achievement. He and Judy would eventually go on to found and run for several other companies, one still active is Wildfire Rentals in Andrews and around the state. He was also still part owner and actively working with Basin Testers.
Anyone who knew Larry well knew he was a wild and funny man (nicknamed Wildfire by his sister Wanda) and loved to make jokes and pull pranks on family and friends. Family and friends thought he was wild because he was a drinking man, but they were wrong. He was still wild after he became sober. One of his proudest accomplishments was his sobriety and he would talk with anyone in need about Alcoholics Anonymous. He fully believed in AA and on Jan 15, 2024, he celebrated his 34th year of sobriety.
During his younger days Larry loved to go “Honky Tonkin” and the Rambling Rose in Llano was one of his favorite places. He was a great dancer and continued to love to dance for the rest of his life where he would amaze great nieces and grandchildren with his graceful and energetic moves.
In 1993, Larry met the love of his life, Judy Pipkin while dancing, even though she initially suggested he ask her mom to dance. Larry and Judy recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary where Judy got to go along for the wild ride. As a team, they both ran their companies and expanded into new areas.
In addition to his business endeavors, Larry loved to collect things and make deals. Between classic cars, guns, and military vehicles, Larry was always looking to “Make a Deal”. In fact, most of his “collections” were accumulated in the act of “making a deal” where he was known to carry an emergency sum of cash “Just in Case” he happened to run across a deal he could not pass up. Larry loved the mountains and him and Judy would meet up with their best friends for weekends and sometimes a week at a time. Wherever they went, he was always the life of the party, making people laugh. Usually everywhere they went to eat, Larry would tell the waitress that the food there was better than jail house food. One time Trish and Jerry Tharp caught him off guard and they got to the café first. They told the waitress when they come in, ask Larry when he got out of jail. When she approached Larry and asked him “when did you get out of jail” the look on his face was priceless. Trish even got a picture of that. Larry made many friends and one especially, Kevin Harrington. Kevin was always there for Larry when he needed help moving cows or checking on his many places of land. Kevin was around on many of Larry’s adventures. Even though they worked, at the end of the day, they made it fun. Larry was a wellrespected businessman and a fun guy to be around. He enjoyed attending his yearly “High School reunion’s” and seeing all his buddies. He also loved having the “Slaughter” reunion and getting to see all of his family. He was a giving man and would help anyone that needed it. He also enjoyed going to watch his great grandson play baseball and his great granddaughter play softball.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty (Buck) York, Wanda Burns, and brothers Ralph Bert, Jerry, and Gary.
Larry is survived by his wife Judy of Andrews, his son Damon (Kay) Slaughter of Cedar Hill TX, daughter Sabrina (Scott) Jones - Ferry of Clinton PA, step daughter Michelle (Teddy) Presley of Andrews, step son Randy Kinsey of Gardendale TX, brother Steve (Susan) of Belton TX, grandchildren Sydney Slaughter of Alaska, Sierra Rankin of Clinton PA, and Brianna Moor of Thibodaux LA, step grandchildren Aureus Morel, Justin (Brittney) Waxler of Andrews, Ashley (Meechy) Waxler-Reed of Andrews, Lacey (Ray) Macias of Andrews, Randa Kinsey of Giddings TX, Josh (Lucy) Brooks of Midland, Raycheal (Monica) Brooks of Andrews, Tori Thompson of Tulsa OK, and numerous nieces, nephews, and step great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 6:00PM-8:00PM at McNett Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the McNett Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Don Sessom officiating. A Graveside service will be held at 2:00PM, March 21, 2024, at the San Saba City Cemetery in San Saba, TX. Pallbearers will include Kevin Herrington, Justin Waxler, Ray Macias, Kirk Slaughter, Shannon Slaughter, and Kim Slaughter. Honorary Pallbearers will include Michael Phillips, Willbur Aylon, and Phil Brown. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.
