Jose A. Contreras Sr., a beloved patriarch, cherished husband, and devoted father, passed away peacefully at the age of 70 on March 11, 2024, in Odessa, Texas. Born on March 16, 1953, in Villa Union Coah, Mexico, to the late Manuel and Gertrudis Contreras, Jose grew up in a large and loving family, which would come to define his own approach to life and love.

Jose’s journey led him to marry Juana Sanchez Contreras, on October 9, 1978, in his hometown. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, and together they raised a beautiful family imbued with strong values and unity. Jose’s legacy is carried on by his wife, Juana; his sons, Jose A. Contreras Jr. and wife Kerri Armendariz, Jose G. Contreras and his wife Teresita, and Daniel Contreras and his wife Lydia; his daughters, Maria Valenzuela and her husband Richard, Aurora Valenzuela and her husband Juan, and Lesly Contreras and her husband Jack Harvey. He was a source of wisdom and inspiration to his siblings, Manuel Contreras and his wife Maria, Pedro Contreras and his wife Ernestina, Hilda Guzman, Ofelia Hernandez, and Maria Arbizu and her husband Jose. Jose’s life was further enriched by the joy of his 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable happiness.

Jose’s work as an operator in the oil field was marked by dedication and a strong work ethic, traits that he also applied to his personal life. Known affectionately as “Papi” by his family and friends, Jose was a hardworking family man who took great pride in his role as a provider and protector. His passion for life was evident in the way he managed the family ranch, caring for the animals with a gentle and nurturing spirit.

Family was the cornerstone of Jose’s life, and he relished the moments when everyone was gathered together. His love for spontaneous cookouts was legendary, and these gatherings became cherished memories for all who attended. Jose’s grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he bestowed upon them a legacy of love, laughter, and treasured stories.

Jose’s adoration for his wife, Juana, was clear to all who knew them. Their partnership was a guiding light for their children and grandchildren, demonstrating the power of love, respect, and commitment. Together, they navigated life’s challenges and celebrated its triumphs, always side by side.

In his passing, Jose is reunited with his parents, Manuel and Gertrudis Contreras; his brothers, Rolando, Juan, Uriel, and Arnoldo Contreras; his sisters, Alma Benavides and Heroina Arizpe; and his granddaughter, Stacey Valenzuela. Their memories are a comfort to those who mourn his loss and will forever remain a part of the family tapestry.

Jose A. Contreras Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering strength, his boundless love for his family, and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose and kindness, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 10:00AM, Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews, TX., burial will follow at the Andrews County North Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 3:00PM-8:00PM, Sunday, March 17, 2024, at McNett Funeral Home, continuing Monday, March 18, 2024, from 10:00AM-7:00PM, with a Rosary to follow from 7:00PM-9:00PM. Arrangements are under the person care of McNett Funeral Home.
