Elizabeth Travis Roberts

Elizabeth Travis Roberts (Nona) passed away peacefully on December 5, 2018. Born October 9, 1917 in Mountain Home, Arkansas to James and Lydia Travis. The family moved to Wisconsin when Elizabeth was very young. She spent her early school years living in OshKosh and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She often shared adventures she had with her siblings while living in Wisconsin. The family moved back to Mountain Home during the Great Depression where Elizabeth excelled academically and was soon working in the banking arena at a young age. In her early 20’s she relocated to Brownfield, Texas to live with her sister Janice and brother-in-law Earl. Elizabeth met and married Charles W. Roberts Jr. in 1940 in Andrews, TX. They had four children while running family businesses including Andrews Insurance Agency and helping the family keep the Andrews County News operating during WWII. In 1959 she was the Insurance Company of North American Woman of the Year. She later moved to Austin, TX in 1962 where she enrolled in the University of Texas and was the oldest freshman on campus! She completed her degree taught school for several years before finishing her career at the University of Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Lydia Travis, her sister Janice and brother James. Survivors include her sister Margaret (103 years of age) and her four children; Diana Burrow, Carol Booth, Cynthia McLaughlin and Charles Roberts III, daughter in law Marilee Roberts, Son in Laws David Burrow, David McLaughlin, She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. In her last years she was in the care of the wonderful and conscientious staff at Westminster Manor and Hospice of Austin. A memorial service will be held this spring among the wild flowers near the family ranch near Gonzales. In lieu of flowers any contributions can be made to Hospice of Austin and/ or the Beto O’Rourke for President campaign.
