On August 26, 1944, Carlos Wayne Mainord was born to W.T. and Faye Mainord in Emory, Texas. Carlos graduated from Greenville High School and proceeded to play college football at Navarro College earning All-American recognition at McMurry in 1965.

Before beginning his illustrious career in coaching, he honorably served his country in the National Guard.

Carlos enjoyed 4 tours under the lights of the Double T, coaching with JT King, Jerry Moore, Spike Dykes and Mike Leach, spanning time from 1968 to 2009. During that time, he would also go to serve as head coach of Ranger College, linebackers/defensive coordinator for Rice and secondary coach for Miami. From 1993-2002, Mainord would serve as an assistant coach to the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and St. Louis Rams before returning to Texas Tech where he ultimately retired in 2009.

Coach loved football and most importantly the relationships that he developed with players and colleagues alike. He brought a passionate, innovative, defensive mind to the field and left an indelible impression on all that had the opportunity to know and work with him. In his retirement, he loved a good game of golf, the companionship of his friends and the ability to spend time with his grandchildren. He was a father with strong family values, and he lived selflessly. He knew how to treat others, could recognize when they needed something, and took care of it.
