Billy was born June 18, 1920, in Divide, Texas, to James Rankin Payne and Joanna “Ault” Payne. He married Erlene Spinks Payne April 8, 1941 and spent over 75 amazing years together. Billy was an extremely devoted family man. He loved to be with his grandchildren, who referred to him as “Pop”. He always had a pocket full of candy for them. He was raised on a farm in Nolan County where he raised steers. When Billy was in Junior High he traveled by train to San Francisco, California to compete in the World Fair, where he won Grand Champion for his steer. He was a proud Veteran of the US Army Air Corps, and his friends would tell you “Not one person could ever have a negative thing to say about him”. Bill, Erlene, and children Dolores and Stan, moved from Divide to Andrews in 1951. Bill worked for Amoco Production Company for 30 years. Bill also loved to play golf, which he did into his 90’s. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend and will be dearly missed.
