Mary E. Varley age 87, of Walnut Springs, passed away on August 15, 2020 in Glen Rose, Texas.

Funeral services are going to be at 2 P.M., Friday, August 21, 2020 at the Walnut Springs Baptist Church in Walnut Springs, Texas. Brady Dempsey will officiate. Visitation will be from Noon until service time on Friday, August 21, 2020 at the church. Pallbearers will be Chad Lopez, Daniel Varley, John Varley, David Wayne Heartsill, David Heartsill, Sammy Contreras, Brandon Ferrel, and Chris Driskell.

Mary Elizabeth Varley was born on October 29, 1932 in Weatherford, Texas to William H. and Geraldine Wicklund Heartsill.

Mary graduated from Walnut Springs High School in 1949 as Valedictorian at the age of 16. Mary attended college at North Texas State in Denton, Texas where she met and married J.L. Varley, Jr., from Collinsville, Texas. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics on January 19, 1952 at the age of 20 and the next day gave birth to Rita Ann Varley. Soon after, Mary and J.L. moved to Leuders, Texas where Dale Russell was born. In 1955 they moved to Andrews, Texas where Susan was born. Mary worked in Andrews, Texas as a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade teacher and attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas during the summers until she earned a Masters of Education degree in 1963. After Mary and J.L. moved to Walnut Springs in 1983 she did school counseling for the surrounding area around Walnut Springs. Mary retired from teaching and counseling in 1995. She was excellent at sewing and gardening. She loved for her grandchildren to visit their ranch outside of Walnut Springs. She will be greatly missed by the family and many friends made over the years.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Rita Ann Varley of San Angelo, Dale Russell Varley and wife, Stacy, of Bryan, Susan Kay Lopez and husband, Juan, of Andrews; 7 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Uloth of Walnut Springs; brothers, Joe Heartsill and wife, Nancy, of San Angelo, Tom Heartsill and wife, Mary, of Walnut Springs; numerous other relatives and many friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, William and Geraldine Wicklund Heartsill; husband, J.L. Varley; and brother, William “Bill” Heartsill.
