Jimmie was born on March 6, 1938, to Eric Smith and Rowena Laughlin. He attended school in Garden City, Tx. He joined the US Army in 1957 and was stationed at Ft. Chaffee, AR. during his stint, he spent time in Germany. He was part of the Mounted Patrol that guarded the German border. He was discharged in 1959. While living in Midland working as a lineman for Texas Electric, he met and married Edwina Breedlove on September 15, 1961. After a couple of months, he was called back into duty and was stationed at Ft. Polk, LA as a sharpshooter instructor for the National Guard. He was discharged in 1962. They later moved to Andrews in 1967 where he continued working for Texas Electric until his retirement after 35 years of service. They moved to San Angelo in 2000 where they’ve spent the last eighteen years.

Jimmie’s greatest joys in life were his family and the occasional team roping. Through the years, he touched many lives, in and out of the arena. He was the first to open a door for a woman or offer his seat to anyone standing. He was admired for his kindness and generosity.

Jimmie was preceded in death by Edwina, his wife of 57 years; his parents, Ted and Rowena Laughlin; his sister, Lyndia Bartlett; and his son, Adam Smith. He is survived by his two daughters, Stacy Spicer and her husband, Shawn, of Weatherford; and Tracy Taylor and her husband, Steve, of Denver City; and by his grandson, Lance Taylor.
